So many people ask us how we started our photography business. It’s one of my favorite stories to tell. See, I have always have had an entrepreneur spirit in me. When our son was around 9 months I did photos with a girlfriend and seeing them I felt something rise inside of me. Ernie and I have always played with photography and at this moment something in me said this is what you need to do.
Truth is, I was really struggling with being a stay at home mom. I laid my dreams of grad school and having my own practice down. I spent so many years working my fingers to the bone to get my psychology degree. I specialized in cognitive neuroscience and got a minor in statistics to push myself ahead of the pack. This was a perfect setup for my to get into my dream PhD clinical psychology program. I did research with the founders and staff and worked on projects at the Salk institute. Wow! For an undergrad I was on fire. There still was a fire in me to do so much more.
After talking with Ernie about wanting to start a photography business, he wasn’t digging the idea. So I continued on with my side things that would bring in extra income. Then one day an opportunity came. One of the girls we rented a room out to in our house was selling a camera she had acquired. It was still in the box and never used. So I gave her free rent in exchanged for the camera. :) Ernie was NOT happy with me. But all I knew is I had to get a camera in his hands and it would set a fire in him.
Sure enough, it did! Two weeks later, we were writing a business plan and started to work on perfecting our shots in camera and finding opportunities to shoot. Now the rest is history! Wow!
I do have to say thank you to all the people who believed in us! Special thanks to J’Mizzle for the camera and Dessa for taking a safe and calculated risk, by on letting us shoot her wedding. Love you all! Love all of you who follow and believe in Ernie and me!
